Bambito is located in the highlands or mountains of Panama in the province of Chiriqui. The first U.S. settlers that arrived in the early 1900's in Bambito named it “La Nueva California” (The New California) because they found that the climate, the beautiful land and the crops that grew in these mountainous prairies like straw berries, flowers of every color, and the green forest hills were very similar to their beloved State of California. These first settlers bought large plots of land and applied their technological expertise for forestry and agriculture which turned this already rich and fertile land into a prime agricultural development.
In 1911, Bambito experienced “La Fiebre de la Madera” (Forestry for Wood Boom). All of the wood used to build the Pacific-Atlantic railroad in Panama came from Bambito. All of the wood that was used to build military facilities by the U.S., such as Gorgas Hospital, also came from Bam bito.
Today, Bambito is best known for its natural beauty, the cultivation of artichokes, apples, lettuce, tomatoes, strawberries, coffee, and it is the number one producer of dairy products in the country.
